Quick Answer

NCC 2022 requires Australian dwellings achieve minimum R-values by climate zone: ceiling R5.0-R7.0, external walls R2.5-R3.0, floor R1.5-R2.5. Total R-value = sum of layers. R-values add up: a wall with R2.5 batt + R0.5 cladding + R0.5 plasterboard = R3.5 total.

Zone 1-3 covers tropical northern Australia (Cairns, Darwin). Zone 4-5 includes Brisbane, Perth, Sydney. Zone 6-8 covers Melbourne, Adelaide, Hobart, Canberra, alpine.

Common Insulation Products and R-Values

  • Glasswool batt R2.5: 90mm thick, suits 90mm timber stud walls
  • Glasswool batt R3.0: 110mm thick, requires 90×45 stud + furring or 140mm stud
  • Glasswool batt R5.0: 175mm ceiling batt, standard residential
  • Polyester batt R2.5: Allergy-friendly, similar thickness to glasswool
  • Reflective foil R1.3: Used as wall sarking, contributes via air gap
  • Spray foam R6.0/100mm: Premium option, used in difficult cavities

FAQs

How do you calculate the total R-value of a wall?

Add the R-values of each layer: insulation + cladding + air gap + lining. R-values are additive when layers are in series. A wall with R2.5 batt + R0.5 cladding + R0.18 air gap + R0.06 plasterboard = R3.24 total.

What is the minimum R-value for walls in NCC 2022?

R2.5 in tropical zones (1-3), R2.8 in mild zones (4-5), R3.0 in cool/alpine zones (6-8). Some councils require higher.

What R-value do I need for the ceiling?

R5.0 minimum in Zone 1-3, R5.5 in Zone 4-5, R6.0-R7.0 in Zone 6-8 per NCC 2022. Most Australian ceiling batts are sold as R5.0 or R6.0.

Does foil sarking count as insulation?

Reflective foil sarking adds R-value only when paired with an air gap. A 20mm air gap with reflective sarking on one side adds about R0.5-R0.6 to the wall total.
