Tile Calculation Formula
Tile Area: (Tile Length ÷ 1000) × (Tile Width ÷ 1000)
Tiles per m²: 1 ÷ Tile Area
Tiles Required: Area × Tiles per m² (rounded up)
Tiles + Waste: Tiles Required × (1 + Waste %)
Grout: Area × 1.5 kg per m²
Tiles per m²: 1 ÷ Tile Area
Tiles Required: Area × Tiles per m² (rounded up)
Tiles + Waste: Tiles Required × (1 + Waste %)
Grout: Area × 1.5 kg per m²
Waste Allowances: Straight 5%, Brick Bond 10%, Diagonal 15%, Herringbone 20%
Note: Grout estimate is approximate and varies by joint width and tile size.
Tile Calculator — Floors, Walls & Wastage
Australia approved 171,000 new dwellings in 2025 (ABS), and nearly every one requires tiling in wet areas. Getting tile quantities right first time avoids costly re-orders and batch-matching headaches.
Tiles Per Square Metre by Size
| Tile Size | Tiles per m² | With 3mm Grout | +10% Waste |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 × 100mm | 100 | 94 | 104 |
| 200 × 200mm | 25 | 24 | 27 |
| 300 × 300mm | 11.1 | 10.8 | 12 |
| 450 × 450mm | 4.9 | 4.8 | 5.3 |
| 600 × 600mm | 2.8 | 2.7 | 3.0 |
| 600 × 300mm | 5.6 | 5.4 | 6.0 |
| 900 × 450mm | 2.5 | 2.4 | 2.7 |
Wastage Guide
| Layout | Wastage Factor |
|---|---|
| Straight / Grid | 5–10% |
| Brick Bond / Offset | 10–12% |
| Diagonal / 45° | 12–15% |
| Herringbone | 15–20% |
Tips for Tile Ordering
- Always order 10% extra for straight layouts, 15% for diagonal patterns.
- Keep spare tiles from the same batch for future repairs.
- Allow 1.5–2 kg of grout per m² for standard floor tiles.
- Adhesive coverage: typically 4–5 kg per m² with a 10mm notched trowel.
