Concrete Volume Formula
Rectangular / Strip: Length × Width × Depth
Circular: π × (Diameter ÷ 2)² × Height
Total Volume: Volume per Item × Quantity
With Waste: Total Volume × 1.10
Circular: π × (Diameter ÷ 2)² × Height
Total Volume: Volume per Item × Quantity
With Waste: Total Volume × 1.10
Note: 10% waste allowance is recommended for concrete pours to account for spillage, over-excavation and uneven surfaces.
Concrete Volume Calculator — Slabs, Footings, Columns & Cylinders
The average Australian new home build uses 20–30 cubic metres of concrete (HIA, 2025). Getting your volume calculations right from the start prevents costly over-ordering and project delays.
Volume Formulas
| Shape | Formula | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Rectangular Slab | L × W × D | 10m × 8m × 0.1m = 8.0 m³ |
| Strip Footing | L × W × D | 40m × 0.6m × 0.3m = 7.2 m³ |
| Pad Footing | L × W × D × qty | 0.6m × 0.6m × 0.6m × 12 = 2.6 m³ |
| Column / Cylinder | π × r² × H | π × 0.15² × 3m = 0.21 m³ |
Common Slab Sizes & Volumes
| Slab Type | Typical Size | Thickness | Volume (m³) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single Garage | 6m × 3m | 100mm | 1.8 |
| Double Garage | 6m × 6m | 100mm | 3.6 |
| Shed Slab | 9m × 6m | 100mm | 5.4 |
| House Slab | 20m × 10m | 100mm | 20.0 |
| Driveway | 15m × 3m | 125mm | 5.6 |
| Patio / Outdoor | 6m × 4m | 100mm | 2.4 |
Tips for Accurate Concrete Ordering
- Always add 5–10% extra for waste and uneven ground.
- Minimum concrete delivery in Australia is typically 0.2–0.5 m³ — check with your supplier.
- For slabs on ground, include edge beams in your volume calculation.
- Round up to the nearest 0.2 m³ when ordering from a batch plant.
