Wall Framing Formulas
Extra for Openings: (Doors × 2) + (Windows × 2) trimmers
Bottom Plate: Wall Length
Top Plate: Wall Length × 1 (single) or × 2 (double)
Noggin Rows: floor(Wall Height ÷ 1350)
Noggin Length: Stud Spacing - Stud Width
Total Lineal: (Total Studs × Height + Plates + Noggins) ÷ 1000
Note: Noggins are spaced at approximately 1350mm centres. Extra trimmers are added for each door and window opening.
Wall Framing Calculator — Studs, Plates & Noggins
The average Australian home requires 15–20 cubic metres of framing timber (FWPA, 2024). This calculator determines stud quantities, plate lengths, noggin counts, and total lineal metres for any wall.
Standard Framing (AS 1684)
| Component | Standard | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Stud Spacing | 450 or 600mm | 450 load-bearing, 600 non-load |
| Wall Height | 2,400mm | Standard floor to ceiling |
| Standard Timber | 90×45mm | Most walls |
| Top Plate | Double | Load-bearing walls |
Formulas
- Studs = (Wall Length / Spacing) + 1 + (Doors×2) + (Windows×2)
- Stud Length = Height − (Plates × Thickness)
- Noggins per row = Studs − 1
- Noggin Length = Spacing − Stud Width
- Total Lineal = all studs + plates + noggins + trimmers + lintels
Timber Sizes
| Size | Use |
|---|---|
| 90×45 | Standard — most walls |
| 90×35 | Non-load-bearing partitions |
| 70×45 | Internal partitions, wet areas |
| 140×45 | External load-bearing, energy compliance |
Frequently Asked Questions
How many studs for a wall?
Wall length / spacing + 1. For 6m at 450mm: 6000/450+1 = ~15 studs. Add 2 per door and 2 per window.
Standard stud spacing?
450mm for load-bearing, 600mm for non-load-bearing (AS 1684).
Double top plate needed?
Standard for load-bearing walls. Non-load-bearing can use single. Double distributes loads and allows plate laps.
What are noggins?
Horizontal timbers between studs for bracing. One row at mid-height is standard. Qty = studs − 1 per row.
